One of the best things about switching to home compostable coffee pods? Once you understand how they work, they’re far more convenient than traditional plastic or aluminum ones and far more sustainable.
Here’s what you need to know:
Using Home Compostable Coffee Pods
There’s no special method here. You need to make sure that the home compostable coffee pods you have chosen fit your coffee machine. You pop them in, brew as normal, and enjoy your coffee.
Disposing of Home Compostable Pods
This is where the impact happens.
✅ If you home compost, you’re good to go.
✅ If not, in Ireland, local authorities accept certified home compostable pods in the brown bin (but always check your local guidelines).
✅ No separating. No rinsing. No return schemes. No hording capsules until the bag is full.
What Not to Do
🚫 Don’t toss them in the recycling bin! They will compost but you are likely to contaminate the dry recycling with coffee granules.
🚫 Don’t be misled by green washing ,unless the pods are certified compostable (e.g. OK Home Compost or EN 13432), they may not break down safely or completely.
Traditional aluminium or plastic pods often end up in landfill, where they can take hundreds of years to break down. Home Compostable coffee pods are plant-based so they break down naturally, and support a closed-loop system that reduces waste.
Your final checklist
Use them like any other pod.
Dispose of them like you would do with food.
