How CO2 & Waste Reduction is Calculated
Calculation in Tonnes
To find the tonnage, we convert the weight of each material into its corresponding CO₂ savings using standard Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) factors.
552 kg × 2.8 kg CO₂/kg = 1.55 tonnes CO₂
40 kg × 11.5 kg CO₂/kg = 0.55 tonnes CO₂
20 kg × 2.5 kg CO₂/kg = 0.05 tonnes CO₂
Summary Table (CO₂ in Tonnes)
| Material | Quantity | Mass (Tonnes) | CO₂ Reduction (Tonnes) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cardboard | Various | 0.552 t | 1.55 t |
| Aluminum Pods | 40,000 units | 0.040 t | 0.55 t |
| Plastic Bottles | 800 units | 0.020 t | 0.05 t |
| TOTAL | 0.612 t | 2.15 t |
Impact Comparison
To put 2.15 tonnes of CO₂ into perspective:
Passenger Vehicles
Equivalent to driving an average car 8,583 km (approx. 5,350 miles)
Tree Carbon
Amount of carbon sequestered by 35 tree seedlings grown for 10 years
Home Heating
Emissions from heating an average home with natural gas for 1.2 years
Breakdown of Waste Diverted
By weight, here's what we've diverted from landfill:
Total Physical Waste Diverted: 612 kg
Mass (612 kg | 0.612t): This is the physical material that didn't go into a hole in the ground.
CO₂ Reduction (2,15t): This includes the invisible weight of the gases that would have been released into the sky to mine the metal, manufacture the plastic, and transport the cardboard.
